Femicide - general characteristics
Cause of death: strangulation (20%), beaten (12%), poisoned (6%) less than 5% are shot
Peak age of death = 25 2/3 = under 35
Predominantly intimate relationship with killer
Intimate femicide characteristics
Majority are married/defacto and living together
Separation is a major factor
Motivation is often jealousy/loss of control
Circumstances surrounding killing - age of relationship
Lengthy relationship - killing more likely to be ‘possessiveness/control’ and involve planning
Recent relationships- violence spontaneous arising from argument, termed ‘sudden rage’
Control
Common thread is ‘the man’s sense of ownership and his control over the continuation or cessation of the relationship
