Grievances
A pre-written and signed document providing specific instructions about what medical treatment a person
chooses to have or omit should the person become unable to make those decisions
Advance Directive
Failing to provide reasonably expected services to prevent harm to a resident or a resident’s property
Neglect
Forcing a person to do something against his or her will
Coercion
Separation of a resident from other residents without the resident’s permission
Involuntary Seclusion
physical , emotional and/or mental injury inflicted on another individual
Abuse
being involved in dishonest acts or not reporting dishonest acts that are observed
Aiding and Abetting
threat or attempt to do physical or mental harm to another
Assault
touching another person’s body or possessions without permission
Battery
freedom to make personal selections such as with activities and attire
Choice
of long duration
Chronic
communication that is untrue and is harmful to the good name or reputation of another person
Defamation of Character
an abbreviation for Do Not Resuscitate, indicating that no extraordinary means should be used when death is near or
occurs; an order must be written by a physician
Do Not Resuscitate (DNR)
restraining or detaining a resident without his or her consent
False Imprisonment
improper use of another person’s money
Financial Abuse
written, signed permission given by one who fully understands all the facts relating to what is going to
happen
Informed Consent
rules set by the government to protect people and help them live peacefully together

guides and rules for lawful behavior
Legal Standard
false written statements or pictures that injure the reputation of another person
Libel
failure to act in a reasonable and careful manner and causing harm to a person or to the person’s property;
acting below the expected standard of practice
Negligence
mistreatment by hitting or other physical contact
Physical Abuse
facility guidelines for care of residents and operation of facility
Policy and Procedure
mistreatment by threatening, belittling or causing emotional harm
Psychological Abuse
meetings held by residents of a skilled nursing facility for the purpose of resolving issues with staff and
communicating with each other
Resident Council
a protective device that limits a resident’s free movement; a doctor’s order is required to use a restraint; may also
be called a safety reminder device
Restraints
use of physical means or threats to force sexual acts
Sexual Abuse
false oral statements that injure the reputation of another
Slander
a facility department which assists in meeting many of the non-medical needs of a resident
Social Services
taking anything that belongs to another person without their consent
Theft
a form of abusive behavior involving the use of language
