Module 2: Psychiatry Flashcards
Reason for depression? (Pathology)
Low serotonin
Function of SSRI’s?
Prevent breakdown of serotonin
Function of SNRI’s?
Increase serotonin and norepinephrine
Function of MAO’s?
Prevents mono oxidase enzyme from removing norepinephrine, serotonin and dopamine from the brain, hence increasing all.
Function of TCA’s?
Inhibit the re-uptake of norepinephrine, dopamine and serotonin.
What is the function of Trazadone also used for depression?
Inhibit serotonin re-update.
High doses are required to treat depression which can cause significant sedation which is why it is used as sleeping medication mainly even thought it is classified as an anti-depressant.
What are SSRI’s effective for?
Sadness, Panic, Compulsion
What are the side effects of SSRI’s?
“ssss”
Stomach upset
Sexual dysfunction
Serotonin syndrome
Sweating (increased)
What is serotonin syndrome?
It is a potentially fatal drug reaction triggered by too much serotonin in the body
What are the symptoms of Serotonin Syndrome?
“Shivers”
S- shivers
H- hperreflexia + myoclonus (muscle jerks)
I- increased temperature
V- vital signs instability (increased HR, BR, and increased/decreased BP)
E-Encephalopathy ( increased LOC)
R-restlessness
S-sweating
What is one way you can develop serotonin syndrome and how can it be treated?
Mixing SSRI’s with dextromethorphan (DM cough syrup).
Treatment: cyproheptadine (serotonin receptor antagonist)
What are the 3 main SNRI’s covered in lecture?
Ventataxine
Bupropian
Mitazapine
Side effects of Ventataxine?
VIS
Vital instability
Insomnia
Sexual dysfunction
Side effects of Bupropion?
SAVIA
Seizures Anxiety Vivid dreams Irritability Agitation
What are the side effects of Mitazapine?
“SAD”
Sexual dysfunction Anticholinergic effects (blocks action of ach) Drowsiness + weight gain!
