How non-verbal behaviours may contribute to communication
Provides confirmation or repetition.
Denies, or confuses, or confirms verbal messages.

Strengthens or emphasises verbal messages.
Regulates or controls verbal communication (for example; end of session cues, such as checking the time or averting the eyes).

Listening requires full attention and periodic responses of encouragement and confirmation of understanding.
TASKS OF LISTENING;
Are there any discordant/sour notes which may require challenging?
Read the non-verbal cues-these messages usually hard to fake and so are “true”
Be aware of social context
Listen for core themes/beliefs which explain affect, cognitions, behaviours.
HOW LISTENING CAN GO WRONG;
1. being distracted
2.being judgemental
3.being filtered through bias
4. when there is too much fact, and not enough emotion from the client
5.when responses are rehearsed
6. If too sympathetic and aligned with the client’s experiences, objectivity may be lacking
