Module 2 - heat treatment ferrous metals Flashcards
What is a ferrous Metal?
Any metal that contains iron
What is annealing?
Annealing is a treatment process that is performed to change the physical properties of a metal. The annealing process requires the metal to be heated above its recrystalization process and be kept there for a certain period of time.
What is normalising
Normalising involves heating a material to a high temperature and allowing it to cool down to room temperature. This process alters the microstructure which reduces its hardness and increases ductility.
What is hardening?
The Hardening process involves heating a steel to red hot and cooling in water or oil (Quenched) This rapid cooling creates a highly stressed martensite. This metal is very brittle and hard and must be tempered.
What is tempering?
The tempering process is used to toughen metals and reduce the unwanted brittleness and hardness which occurs when quenching. Tempering is done by heating the metal to a point when the internal stresses diffusses followed by slow cooling in air.
What are some examples of ferrous metals?
Wrought Iron, Steel, White Cast iron, stainless steel, and grey cast iron.
What are surface hardening methods?
Carburising
Nitriding
Flame Hardening
Induction Hardening
What is surface hardening?
Surface hardening is the process or hardening a metals surface t make it resistant to abbrasion and wear.
