Module 2 Foundations in Chemistry Flashcards
Define isotope.
An isotope is an atom of the same element with a different number of neutrons and different masses
Define relative atomic mass.
The weighted mean mass of an atom relative to 1/12th the mass of one atom of carbon-12
Define relative isotopic mass.
mass of an atom of an isotope of the element compared with 1/12th the mass of an atom of carbon-12 which is taken as 12
The relative isotopic mass is the same as which number?
The mass number
What are the uses of mass spectrometry?
- Identify unknown compounds
- Find relative abundance of each isotope of an element
- Determine structural information
How to calculate relative molecular mass and relative formula mass? When is each one used?
Both are calculated by adding the relative atomic masses of each atom making up the molecule or formula. You use relative formula mass when talking about a compound and relative molecular mass when talking about simple molecules.
What is the molecular formula for nitrate?
NO3^-
What is the molecular formula for carbonate?
CO3^2-
What is the molecular formula for sulfate?
SO4^2-
What is the molecular formula for hydroxide?
OH^-
What is the molecular formula for ammonium?
NH4^+
What is the definition of anhydrous?
Anhydrous describes the compounds left after water is removed from a hydrated compound
What is the definition of empirical formula?
The simplest ratio of the whole number of elements in a compound
What is the definition of hydrated?
Containing water
What is the definition of a mole?
The amount of substance which contains the same number of particles as there are atoms in 12g of carbon-12
