Module 2 definitions (both papers) Flashcards
Ion
An ion is an electrically charged particle formed by the loss or gain of one or more electrons from an atom or a group of atoms.
Isotopes
Isotopes are atoms of the same element with the same number of protons and different numbers of neutrons and therefore different masses.
Relative atomic mass
Relative atomic mass is the weighted mean mass of an atom of an element relative to 1/12th of the mass of an atom of carbon-12.
Relative isotopic mass
Relative isotopic mass is the mass of an isotope relative to 1/12th of the mass of an atom of carbon-12.
What is empirical formula?
Empirical formula is the simplest whole number ratio of atoms of each element present in a compound.
What is molecular formula?
Molecular formula is the actual number and type of atoms of each element in a molecule.
What is stoichiometry?
Stoichiometry is the relationship between the amounts of reactants and products in a chemical reaction; this information is presented in the balanced chemical equation.
First ionisation energy
The energy needed to remove 1 mole of electrons from 1 mole of gaseous atoms, to form 1 mole of gaseous 1+ ions
Second ionisation energy
The energy needed to remove 1 electron from each ion in 1 mole of gaseous 1+ ions to form 1 mole of gaseous 2+ ions
