intersectionality
a way of understanding how race, class, gender, and other individual characteristics intersect with one another and overlap
Critical Race Theory (CRT)
a lens through which we can look at many institutions in the U.S. (most especially law and policy) to understand how they were structurally designed to prioritize whiteness
Individual/Internalized Oppression
a person’s beliefs and actions that serve to perpetuate oppression
Interpersonal Oppression
the interactions between people both within and across difference
Institutional Oppression
policies and practices at the organization (or “sector”) level that perpetuate oppression
Structural Oppression
how these effects interact and accumulate across institutions, and across history
implicit bias
biases that we hold subconsciously
cancel culture
the practice of withholding or withdrawing of support from a person or entity who says something judged to be offensive, and the encouragement of others to do so
community censorship
the silencing of speech by private individuals or entities, not by the government
counterspeech
tactic of countering hate speech or misinformation by presenting an alternative narrative rather than with censorship of the offending speech
black twitter
a network of culturally connected communicators using the platform to draw attention to issues of concern the black communities
identity politics
the practice of advocating for the interests of yourself and others who share the same identities (esp. race, class, gender, etc)
snowflakes
a negative term for people who are perceived to be emotionally weak for being unable to hear ideas that they dislike or that make them uncomfortable
