Module 2: Chemistry-Properties and States of Matter Flashcards
Compound
A pure substance that contains two or more elements chemically joined in a fixed proportion.
Mixture
Two or more substances mixed together but not chemically bonded.
Elements
A pure substance that cannot be broken down into a simpler substance and contains only one type of atom.
Molecules
The smallest unit of a chemical compound composed of two or more atoms bonded together.
Atoms
The smallest chemical unit of an element.
Homogeneous Mixture
The mixture appears to contain only type of substance because the substances are so evenly distributed that it is difficult to distinguish one substance in the mixture from another.
Heterogeneous Mixture
Means the substances in the mixture are different from another.
Pure Substances
Matter that cannot be separated into any other substance and always has the same composition.
Solvent
The substance in a solution in which the solute dissolves.
Solute
The substance in a solution that gets dissolved.
Plasma
This fourth phase of matter exists where temperatures reach millions of degrees Celsius.
Solution
A homogeneous mixture made by dissolving one substance in another.
Conductivity
The ability of a substance to allow heat & electricity to flow through it.
Diffusion
The natural (passive) movement within gases and liquids that spreads out particles from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration.
Density
The ratio of a substance’s mass to it’s volume.
