Protocol
What two protocols from the 90’s are obsolete?
IPX and SPX
A set of protocols that work cooperatively is called?
Protocol suite or protocol stack
What is the most common protocol stack?
Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)
What are the four layers of the TCP/IP model?
Application
Transport
Internetwork
Network access
What 8 protocols work within the Application layer of the TCP/IP model?
HTTP, FTP, DHCP, TFTP
SMTP, POP3, DNS, SNMP
What 2 protocols work within the Transport layer of the TCP/IP model?
TCP, UDP
What 4 protocols work within the Internetwork layer of the TCP/IP model?
ICMP, ARP, IPsec
IPv4, IPv6
What 4 protocols work within the Network access layer of the TCP/IP model?
Ethernet, token ring, FDDI, WAN Technologies
What is another name used for Internetwork layer?
Internet Layer
In the TCP/IP model which 4 protocols use the UDP protocol in the Application layer?
DHCP, DNS, TFTP, SNMP
In the TCP/IP model which 4 protocols use the TCP protocol in the Application layer?
HTTP, FTP, SMTP, POP3
What is the unit of information the Transport layer works with when using TCP
A segment
What is the unit of information the Transport layer works with when using UDP?
Datagram
The transport layer passes the segment or datagram to which layer?
Internetwork layer
What is the last stop before a packet is delivered to the network medium?
The last stop is to the Network access layer where the NIC operates.
What occurs when a packet gets to the Network access layer?
This is the layer where the NIC operates and adds on a frame header and trailer.
|Frame Header| IP Header| TCP Header | get the cengage.com home page| Frame Trailer|
After packet is released from the Network Access layer, what occurs with the packet and where does it go?
The packet is delivered to the network medium as bits and makes it’s way to the website server, such as www.cengage.com server, where the web server software processes the packet and returns the web page requested on the computer requesting.
