Module 2 Flashcards
How can chemical reactions be identified
By energy changes
Define exothermic reactions
Exothermic reactions release energy to the the surroundings so the products have less chemical energy than the reactants
Define the term endothermic
ENDOTHERMIC reactions take in energy from the surroundings
so the products have more chemical energy than the reactants.
What is a reactant
The substances that react to together to make the products
What is the term product
A product is the results of the reactants reacting together
What is a fuel
A fuel is a substance which is burned to release energy
What is the composition of air
Nitrogen- 78%
oxygen - 21%
Argon - 0.9%
Carbon dioxide - 0.0038
What is another word for burning
Combustion
What happens when a substance burns
It reacts with oxygen
What is the test for oxygen
It relights a glowing splint
What happens when carbon reacts with oxygen
It produces carbon dioxide
What is the test for carbon dioxide
It turns lime water milky/cloudy
When can carbon monoxide be produced
When carbon burns in an insufficient supply of oxygen
What is carbon monoxide
A toxic gas
What happens when hydrogen reacts with oxygen
Hydrogen reacts with oxygen to produce water
What is the test for hydrogen
It burns with a squeaky pop
What is hydrogen hailed as
Hydrogen is hailed as a fuel of the future
What are fossil fuels
Coal, oil, gas
When and how were coal and oil and gas were formed
Coal, oil and gas were formed from the remains of plant and
animal organisms that lived millions of years ago
What do oil and gas burn to produce
They burn to produce carbon dioxide
What do crude oil and natural gas mainly consist of
Compounds called hydrocarbons
What two elements do hydrocarbons contain
Hydrogen and carbon
What dose the word finite mean
It means there is a limited supply of it and we will run out
