Module 2 Flashcards
Saphenous Opening
Gap in the fascia lata below medial part of inguinal ligament
Pierced by the great saphenous vein, superficial inguinal ligament, efferent lymphatics from superior inguinal lymph nodes
Femoral Triange
Boundaries: Inguinal ligament, sartorious, adductor longus, pectineus, skin & superficial fascia with its contents
Contents of the femoral triangle
Femoral artery Femoral vein Femoral sheath Genitofemoral N Femoral N & Branches Lateral Cutaneous N Deep Inguinal Lymph Node
Femoral Sheath
A funnel shaped sheath which descends from the lower part of abdomen to surround upper most 4cm of femoral vessels in femoral triangle
Femoral Ring
L: Genitofemoral N & Femoral Artery
I: Femoral Vein
M: Deep Lymph or Nodes of Rosenmuller
Function of the femoral sheath
Allow for smooth and easy gliding of the femoral vessels during movement of thigh and hip joint
Femoral Canal
Rectangular shaped compartment within femoral triangle
Femoral Ring - Boundaries
Inguinal ligament, pectineal ligament, laclunar ligament, femoral vein
Superficial Branches of Femoral Artery & Structures they pierce
Superficial epigastric artery - pierces upwards and medially to supply infra-umbilical part of anterior abdominal wall
Superficial Circumflex Iliac Artety - pierces fascia lata laterally to the saphenous opening to supply the vastus lateralis muscle
Superficial external pudendal artery pierces cribiform fascia and passes medially in front of spermatic cord or round ligament of uterus to supply external genital organs
Deep External Pudendal Artery
Branch of femoral that passes medially across the pectineus and adductor longus and supplies the external genitalia
Deep Profunda Femoris Arty
Largest branch of the femoral artery and follows the femoral artery and branches laterally. Branches - medial and lateral circumflex femoral artery ad 4 perforating arteries
Descending Genicular Artery
Originates from the femoral artery and gives off a musculocutaneous and saphenous branch
Femoral Vein
- beginning, termination, tributaries & valves
Upward continuation of the popliteal vein through the adductor opening and continues as external iliac vein behind the inguinal ligament, medial to the femoral artery.
Tributaries - profunda vein, medial & lateral circumflex femoral vein, deep pudendal vein, great saphenous vein, muscular vein
Femoral Nerve - course and relations
Arises from dorsal divisions of ventral rami of L2-4 and enter the thigh behind the midpoint of the inguinal ligament to the femoral artery outside the femoral sheath between iliacus and psoas major muscle before ending in saphenous nerve
Muscular Branches of Femoral N
Iliacus
Pectineus
Vascular branch to femoral A
Int. Cutaneous nerve of thigh
Medial cutaneous N of thigh
N to Sartorious
