What does CAR stand for?
Charge System
Apply Brakes
Release Brakes
What is meant by facing points?
Loco travelling towards the toe point
What is meant by Trailing Points?
Loco travelling through the points

What is SPAD?
Signal Passed At Danger
What is Shunting?
Shunting is attaching & detaching rollingstock & placing it where it needs to be
Handbrakes are fitted to the B end.
What does Handbrake consist of?
Handbrake wheel
Handbrake Ratchet
Handbrake release lever
Chain
Consequences of worker being distracted whilst performing safety critical task
Collision
Derailment
SPAD
Injury or death
How do you know when handbrakes are released?
Brake block not against wheel
Brake cylinder not visible
Handbrake chain is slack
How do you know when park brakes are applied?
Brake block firmly against wheel
Brake cylinder is visible
The handbrake chain is tight
What does Draft Gear consist of?
Draft Pocket
Draft Package
Draft Yoke
What are the two types of automatic couplers
Top Lift
Bottom Lift
Why do we perform stretch test?
Ensure the coupler has locked into place
What are the following Dangerous Goods Classes:
Explosive 1
Oxidizing Agents
Toxic
Marine Pollutant
Fireworks - Explosive 1
Oxidising Agent - 5.1
Toxic - 6
Marine Pollutant - Misc 9
What information is on a Safety Data Sheet?
Hazards
Identification
PPE
Fire Fighting Measure
First Aid
What are Point Clips?
Mechanical device fitted underneath the rail to secure the switch blade tight against the rail stock on a set of points
What are Five Mandatory Shunting Requirements & Responsibilites?
- Maintain three points of contact when accessing & egressing rail vehicles
- maintain a minimum of 5m clearance when walking around front and rear of stationary rail vehicles
- Ensure a minimum of 10m separation before walking between stationary rollingstock
- never ride on wagons
- never inspect or set points from a vehicle
- stop shunting if communication is lost or not understood
- verbal commands must include direction & distance
- 1/2 distance
What is the Three Step Protection?
- Apply “Independent Brake’
- Place “Direction Controller’ to Neutral position
- Open the ‘Generator Field’ switch
What equipment is fitted to the headstock?
- Automatic Couplers & Levers
- Air Hoses & Dummy Couplers
- Air Isolation Cocks
- Draft Gear
As a minimum what must a Shunt Plan consist of?
- Date & Time
- Names and roles of involved workers
- Details of the planned shunt movements
- Nominated radio channel
- Identified hazards for the task and control measures
When is 3 Step Protection used & why is it used?
Anytime you need to enter the profile of the Red Zone
Protect workers from uncontrolled movement
When coupling rail vehicles with automatic couplers, what are 3 of your responsibilities in regards to safety?
- 3 Step Protection
- Couplers must be stationary
- Stand in safe place facing all oncoming movements
Coupling may still have air inside and not be stable therefore causing serious injury to worker.
Explain the correct process for opening air cocks and what safety aspects must be considered?
- Open receiving end then the supply end when adding air
- Close supply end then receiving end when releasing air
- Ensure couplers correctly coupled
- 3 Step Protection prior to starting task
When securing vehicles, what are two things that determine the number of handbrakes required to be applied?
- The gradient of the track
- The number of vehicles
Name safety requirements involved with the applying or releasing of handbrakes?
- 3 Step Protection
- Ensure sufficient handbrakes have been applied to hold indefinitely on the grade
- Technique, Posture, Manual Handling
There are risks associated with manually operating hand operated points, what must you do to minimise these risks?
- Face rail traffic
- Do not stand between rail & lever
- Avoid sudden or jerky movements
- Avoid awkward posture
- Consider weather conditions
When working or walking near points all workers must;
- Be aware of rail vehicle movements approaching points
- Do not step on or within points, interlocking equipment or on rails
- Do not walk between the point lever and the track
Name two types of derailers?
. One way derailer
- Bi-directional derailer
- Choke block
Visual Reference
What is Marshalling?
Attaching and detaching rollingstock to make up a consist as specified on a train list
Dangerous goods class 3 signage
What does SHE stand for
- Safety Health Environment
Where can you locate emergency information?
- Toolbox talk (pre meeting)
- Howed
- Emails
- Safety board
