Module 2 Flashcards
What are isotopes?
Atoms of the same element with different number of neutrons and different masses
What is the relative mass of an electron?
1/1800
What is atomic number?
total number of protons in the nucleus
What is mass number?
the total number of protons and neutrons in the atom
Why do isotopes have the same chemical properties?
same electronic structure
electrons are the ones to react
Why do isotopes have slightly different physical properties?
they have different masses
What is relative isotopic mass?
mass of one isotope relative to the mass of 1/12th the mass of carbon-12
What is relative atomic mass?
weighted mean mass of an atom relative to 1/12th the mass of carbon-12W
What is a mole?
amount of substance in grams that has the same number of particles as there are atoms in 12 grams of carbon-12.
What is Avagadro’s constant?
no. of particles per mole
6.02 x 1023
What is the empirical formula?
the simplest whole number ratio of atoms of each element in a compound
What is the molecular formula?
the actual number and type of atoms present of each element in a moleculeW
What is a hydrated salt?
salt that contains water of crystallisation
