Module 2 Flashcards
What are the two body fluid compartments?
Extracellular fluid and Intracellular fluid
What are the four functions of cell membranes?
Physical isolation between ICF and ECF
Regulation of exchange with the environment
Communication between cell and environment
Structural support through cell - cell connections
What are the main building blocks of cell membranes and why does the composition amount change?
Protein, Lipid and Carbohydrates
The composition changes based of function with more metabolically active cells having more proteins
What are the three main types of lipids found in cell membranes?
Phospholipid - the main lipid of cell membranes
Sphingolipid - longer than phospholipid to make elevated areas
Cholesterol - increases viscosity and decreases permeability. Provides stability to membrane
What are the two types of proteins in cell membranes
Integral proteins - lipid anchored and Trans-membrane
Peripheral proteins - attached to integral proteins or phospholipid heads
What is a caveolae?
A depression / indentation within the Cellular membrane
What are the two types of Cell membrane Carbohydrates?
Glycoprotein - attached to a protein. Protective coat & Recognition
Glycolipid - attached to a lipid. cell to cell recognition
