MODULE 12 Flashcards
the tongue is covered with moist, pink tissue called
mucosa
tiny bumps that gives the tongue its rough texture is called
papillae or lingual papillae
the tether that holds down the front of the mouth is called
frenum or lingual frenulum
the left and rights sides of the tongue are separated by a vertical section of fibrous tissue known as the
lingual septum
This division is along the length of the tongue save for the very back of the pharyngeal part and is visible as a groove called the
median sulcus
the human tongue is divided into two parts called
anterior oral part and posterior pharyngeal part
characteristics for the anterior oral part of the tongue
2/3 and highly mobile
characteristics of the posterior pharyngeal part
1/3, less mobile, separated fron epiglottis by VALLECULAE
The human tongue is divided into anterior and posterior parts by the
terminal sulcus
The apex of the terminal sulcus is marked by a blind foramen called
foramen cecum
surfaces of the tongue
DORSAL and VENTRAL surface
small, nipple-like structures on the upper surface of the tongue that give it its characteristic rough texture.
lingual papilla
the type of papillaes that are not associated with taste buds
filiform papillae
most numerous, cone-shaped, responsible for the sensation of touch, and do not contain taste buds
filiform papillae
club-shaped, found on the sides and tip of the tongue, scattered amongst the filiform papillae, can distinguish the five tastes
fungiform papillae
short vertical folds, 4-5, leaf-like ridges of mucosa, bilaterally symmetrical, found on each sides at the back of the tongue
folliate papillae
dome-shaped, in front of the terminal sulcus and foramen cecum, 8-12, 1-2mm wide
circumvallate papillae
