Module 10: the nervous and endocrine system Flashcards
central nervous system
brain and spinal cord
peripheral nervous system
sensory and motor neurons that connect the cns to the rest of the body
nerves
bundled axons that form neural cables connecting the CNS with muscles, glands, and sense organs
sensory (afferent) neurons
carry incoming information from the body’s tissues and sensory receptors to the brain and spinal cord
moter (efferent) neurons
neurons that carry outgoing information from the brain and spinal cord to the muscles and glands
interneurons
within the brain and spinal cord; communicate internally and process information, between the sensory inputs and motor outputs
somatic nervous system
division of the peripheral nervous system that controls the body’s skeletal muscles
autonomic nervous system
controls the glands and muscles of the internal organs (autonomically controls basic body functions)
sympathetic nervous system
arouses the body
parasympathetic nervous system
calms the body
reflexes
a simple, automatic response to a sensory stimulus
endocrine system
set of glands that secrete hormones into the blood stream
hormones
chemical messengers regulated by the endocrine glands
hypothalmus
controls the pituitary gland
thyroid
affects metabolism
