Module 1 Vocab Flashcards
Relation
No rules! Any set of ordered pairs (x,y)
Function
A relation in which each x-coordinate has exactly one y-coordinate (vertical line test)
One-to-one function
A function for which each y-coordinate has exactly one x-coordinate (horizontal line test)
Domain
The set of inputs (x-coordinates) of a relation or function
Range
The set of outputs (y-coordinates) of a relation or function
Set builder notation
Rebuild a set of numbers by using a bracket and the variable {x|x€lR}
U
Union of two sets, used when a domain and range are discontinuous
Interval notation
We just write the beginning and ending numbers of the interval;
[ ] square bracket when we want to include the end value
OR
( ) round bracket when we don’t
Continuous
No gaps or breaks in the graph
Discrete
Made up of individual points (not connected)
Discontinuous
A broken continuous segment
Linear Function
Only raised to the power of 1
Single straight line
Written in form y=mx+b
Function notation
f(x) / g(x)
Ex. f(x)= 2x+7 which is the same as y=2x+7 (just the technical way to write y)
Intercept
A point where the graph of a function intersects an axis (x-int., y-int.)
Point symmetry
Function is rotated about a point and maps onto itself
