Module 1 - The impact of technology Flashcards
Explain society’s reliance on technology
We rely on technology for keeping track of records, finances, entertainment, and keeping up with society.
What is digital literacy
Having current knowledge and understanding of computers, mobile devices, the web, and related technologies. It’s essential to careers, contributing to global communication, and participating effectively in the international community.
What is a computer?
An electronic device, operating under the control of instructions stored in its own memory. It can accept, process, and store information for future use.
What is data?
Raw facts like numbers and text
What is hardware?
The device itself and its components. This includes wires, cases, switches, electronic circuits. It’s the physical components that make up the computer.
Software?
The programs and apps that instruct the computer to perform tasks. Processes data into meaningful information.
The brief history of computers
The first generation used vacuum tubes that controlled the flow of electrons. Availability were limited, large, quickly wore out.
Second generation: Transistors replaces vacuum tubes, smaller, cheaper, more reliable.
Third Gen: Integrated circuits
Microprocessor
Computers for personal use became popular.
Personal computers (PC)
What’s a microprocessor and who introduced it?
The brains of the computer, a chip that contains a central processing unit (CPU) introduced by Ted hoff.
What’s the IoT
The internet of things, an environment where processors are embedded in every project imaginable. Communicate with one another via internet or wireless network. Referred to as smart devices
Examples of IoT
Alarm clocks, coffeemakers, thermostats, navigation systems.
Embedded computer
Part of the IoT, a computer that functions as one component in a larger product with a specific purpose. They enhance a product and have limited hardware. Embedded computer in a printer can monitor ink levels, paper levels, and paper jams.
What are the uses of Artificial Intelligence?
Speech recognition, virtual reality, logical reasoning, creative responses.
What is the purpose of AI?
The technological use of logic and prior experience to simulate human intelligence.
What is the goal of AI?
Minimize the gap between what a machine can do and what a human can do.
What is Virtual reality?
The use of computers to simulate a real or imagined environment that appears as a 3-dimensional space.
