Module 1 Terminology Flashcards
Central Nervous System (CNS)
Consists of the brain and spinal cord (brainstem and cerebellum included)
Peripheral Nervous System (PNS)
All neurons outside of or peripheral to the central nervous system divided into the somatic and autonomic systems
Somatic Nervous System
Part of the peripheral nervous system associated with the innervation of sensory organs and the voluntary control of body movements via skeletal muscles
Autonomic system
The part of the peripheral nervous system associated with the innervation of viscera that operates largely below the level of consciousness
Sensory neurons
Receive stimulation from the periphery and transmit the information to the CNS
Interneurons
Receive either sensory or motor info and pass that info to other neurons: only in CNS
Motor neurons
Receive stimulation from the CNS and then project to a muscle or gland
Afferent neurons
Sensory neurons that carry nerve impulses from sensory stimuli towards the central nervous system
Efferent neurons
Motor neurons that carry neural impulses away from the central nervous system and towards muscles to cause movement
