Module 1 Shapes of Molecules Flashcards
How would you show an bonded atom going away from the center atom?
A dotted line shows an atom moving away from the center atom
How would you show a bonded atom coming towards you but away from the center atom
a small right angle triangle (doesn’t have to be accurate) is used to show atoms coming towards you.
how would you show an atom being flat against the page?
A normal line shows an atom being flat against the page.
What degree angle do 2 bonds have between them? For e.g. CO2 And what is the structure called?
180 degree’s
Linear
what degree angle do 3 bonds have between them? for e.g. BF3 And what is the structure called?
120 degree’s
Trigonal planar
what degree angle do 4 bonds have? For e.g. CH4
And what is the structure called?
109.5 degree’s
Tetrahedral
How does a lone pair of electrons effect the bond angle?
A lone pair increases the bond degree distance by the equivalent of one extra bond +2.5 degrees. For e.g. the bond angle of H2O would be 104 degrees.
What degree angle would 6 bonds have? For e.g. SF6
And what is the structure called?
90 degrees
octahedral
What degree angle would 5 bonds have? For e.g. PCl5
And what is the structure called?
120 degree’s against the page, 90 degree’s up and down
Trigonal Bipyramidal
