Module 1: Section 5 Flashcards
adverse effects
extension of theraputic effect (overdose), unrelated to main drug action (ex.naseua), alergic reaction, withdrawl and addiction, teratogenesis (fetus) , adverse biotransformation reaction (when drug is converted to a chemically reactive metabolite that cna bind to tissue components and cause tissue or organ damage)
why is it difficult to predict adverse reactions
rarity of occurence, lenght of usage (dosent happen till later), may not e detectible in animals, time period specififty (ex, abnormalities in fetus)
assesing frug toxcicty
theraputic index (td50/ed50)
TD50
toxic dose in 50 percent of population
ED50
dose of drug that is effective in 50 percent of population
higher the therputic index
safer it is
drug food interaction
tyramine, grapefruit
