Module 1 Review Flashcards
What is the definition of chemistry
the study of matter and its changes
What are the 3 things that chemistry studies?
- the properties, composition and structure of matter
- the changes matter undergoes
- the energy associated with those changes
provide one example of how chemistry is part of everything you do
health care field: chemistry is essential to understanding how our bodies function and how they interact with their surroundings
What is science?
the methodical exploration of nature and logical explanation of the observations
What contribution did Robert boyle contribute to the field of science?
Father of chemistry, stated that scientific speculation is worthless unless it was supported by experimental evidence, his ideas led to the development of the scientific method
What is the scientific method?
a systematic approach to solving a problem
differentiate between a hypothesis, theory and law
hypothesis- an educated guess, a prediction and untested explanation
theory- describes how or why observations happen, explains behavior
law- summarizes what happens, states a measureable relationship, does not explain why
How to write a hypothesis
It is hypothesized/ predicted that…. because….
Steps of the scientific method
- question/problem
- get educated (literature search/ preliminary experimentation)
- Hypothesis
- test hypothesis (experimentation)
- draw conclusions (is the hypothesis supported/ not supported)
What type of experimentation is utilized with the scientific method?
controlled experimentation- an experiment in which only 1 variable is changed at a time so the results can be directly attributed to a specific variable
define Manipulated variable
the independent variable, the one variable being changed or manipulated during the experiment
define Responding variable
dependent variable, the variable(s) that change as a result of the changes in the manipulated variable
define Control variable
all the things kept the same in the experiment so you know the results are due to the manipulated variable
Branches of chemistry
organic, inorganic, biochem and analytical
what does organic chem study?
substances containing carbon
what does inorganic chem study?
substances that contain little or no carbon
what does biochem study?
substances that are derived from plants and animals
What is the definition of matter?
something that has mass and takes up space
what is not matter?
forms of energy; light, sound, heat, electrical
why is mass the preferred quantity to measure matter?
because it can measure the amount of matter an object contains without being affected by gravity
differentiate between composition and structure
composition- what something is made of
structure- what something is made of and how the components are arranged
define and differentiate between an atom and a molecule
atoms- the fundamental units of matter
molecules- a group of atoms held tightly together
define pure substances
matter with 100% constant composition, can be elements (1 type of atom) or compounds (different types of atoms chemically bonded together called elements)
define mixtures
matter with less than 100% constant composition, two or more different substances physically combined together
