What is art?
The expression or application of human creative skill and imagination.
What is Contemporary Arts?
Refers to art made and produced by artists living today.
Contemporary is on?
Present period;
Last half 20th century-present (1950s onwards)
Elements of Arts and Design
Line, Shape, Form, Value, Space, Color, Texture
What is line?
Point moving in space. Line may be two or three dimensional, descriptive, implied, or abstract.
What is shape?
An element of art that is two dimensional, flat or limited to height or width.
What is form?
Three dimensional and encloses volume: includes height, width and depth. Form may also be free flowing.
What is value?
The lightness or darkness of tones or color.
What is space?
Positive or negative areas are defined or a sense of depth achieved in a work of art.
What is color?
An element of art made up of three properties:
Hue - name of color
Value - hue’s lightness and darkness
Intensity - quality of brightness and purity
What is texture?
Refers to the way things feel or look
Principles of Arts and Designs
Rhythm, Balance, Emphasis, Unity, Pattern, Movement and Contrast.
What is rhythm?
Indicates movement created by a careful placement of repeated elements in a work of art to cause a visual tempo or beat.
What is balance?
A way of combining elements to add a feeling of equilibrium or stability to a work of art.
What is emphasis?
A way of combining elements to stress the difference between those elements.
What is unity?
Refers to the relationship of a certain elements to the whole and to each other.
What is pattern?
A way of combining similar elements in an art work to accent their similarities
What is movement?
Used to create the look or feeling of action and to guide the viewer’s eye throughout the work of art.
What is contrast?
Refers to the arrangement of opposite elements and effects.
