Module 1: Nervous System Structure and Development Flashcards
dorsal: ventral
back and belly
cranial: caudal
head end and tail end
proximal:distal
close to and far away
anterior:posterior
front end and back end
rostral
nose or mouth end
medial: lateral
towards the midline or away from it
anterior: posterior (biped)
same as ventral and dorsal
superior: inferior (biped)
describe the position in the vertical axis (closer to head or closer to feet)
cephalic: caudal (biped)
-cephalic: identical meaning to cranial
-mainly used when referring to the brain
what is the transverse plane also known as
axial/ horizontal plane
what is the frontal plane also known as
coronal (can be cut at any position from the front to the back of the brain)
what is the longitudinal plane also known as
sagittal plane
motor neurons/ efferent neurons
carry a signal towards a target tissue or organ to make something happen
sensory neurons/afferent neurons
detect changes in the environment and carry signal about that change to the CNS
