Module #1: Introduction, Types of Research, and Evaluation Flashcards
What is the purpose of basic research? Provide one example.
Basic research is qualitative and conducted to develop or refine theory. Does not concern itself with immediate utility of the findings.
A Basic research question could be “How does anxiety impact the performance of college students?”
What is the purpose of applied research? Provide one example.
Applied research is looking to solve practical problems. It is conducted for the purpose of applying or testing a theory to determine its usefulness in solving practical problems.
An applied research example would be investigating which treatment approach is the most effective for reducing anxiety.
What is the purpose of evaluation research? Provide one example.
Evaluation research is used to look at a program and monitor the progress, judge the impact, and make decisions.
An evaluation research question could be “Did the new diversity curriculum meet student’s needs?”.
What is a needs assessment? Provide one example.
It is used to determine the need of a program. It is also used to make recommendation for how to address a problem.
An example would be asking “What kind of programs does the target population need?”
What is a formative evaluation? Provide one example.
It is used to identify how to improve an existing program and offered after the program is completed.
An example would be asking questions like “How is this program being delivered?” “Is it having the desired impact?”
What is a summative evaluation?
Provide one example.
It is used to determine success of a program and decide if it should be continued or eliminated.
An example of questions to ask would be “Is this program the best to address the problem?”
What is process evaluation?
It aims to examine the processes of a program (i.e. techniques, events, technology, etc.
What is outcome evaluation and what are its two levels?
Outcome evaluation aims to examine the changes and or/impact a program had on its participants. There are short term and long term outcomes. With STO you are looking to see what immediately changes in participants as a result of the program and with LTO you are looking to see what the long term changes are expected from the program
