What is the definition of aphasia?
Neurogenic, acquired language disability caused by a brain injury
What language modalities are primarily impacted?
Both comprehension and expressive areas not limited to:
- Auditory comprehension
- Reading comprehension
- Speaking
- Writing
What are the primary causes of aphasia?
Stroke, HTN, DM, stress, smoking, high cholesterol, brain injury, neoplasms, neurotoxic agents, other diseases
What is aphasia NOT classified as?
Not developmental, not a motor impairment, not a cognitive issue, not affecting sensation or intellect
What are two commonly associated disorders with aphasia?
- Apraxia of Speech
- Dysarthria
Apraxia of Speech
A motor planning disorder, resulting in impairment programming of speech movements
Dysarthria
Weakness of muscles in speech
Anomia
Difficulty with word finding and retrieval
Paraphasia
A word substitution error, in parts of words or entire words in a sentence
Neologism
Made up word that includes made up sounds
Logorrhea
Incoherent talkativeness, the inabiltiy to stop talking
Jargon (Fluent)
Can sound like a normal utterance, but inclues multiple paraphasic substitions (aka world salad or gibberish)
Circumlocution
Talking around the word you want to say
Agrammatism (Nonfluent)
Errors or omissions in grammer, shortened words, slow or hesitant flow, reduced prosody
Paragrammatism
A pattern of multiple grammar errors
