Module 1: History of Human Factors in Aviation Flashcards
What is Human Factors?
The science of understanding the properties of human capability and limitations, the application of this understanding to the design, development, and deployment of systems and services, and the art of ensuring successful application of human factor principles into the aviation working environment.
Important: Human Factors is a multidisciplinary field.
History of Human Factors
Human error studies in medicine by industrial engineers Frank Gilbreth and Lillian Gilbreth, in the early 1900s.
PAUL FITTS
Led scientific investigations that contributed to the design of modern aircraft cockpits, significantly reducing pilot errors and fatal plane crashes
ALPHONSE CHAPANIS
Published the first textbook on Human Factors: Applied Experimental Psychology: Human Factors in Engineering Design
What does the PEAR MODEL stands for?
People, Environment, Actions, Resources.
What does the SHELL MODEL stands for?
Software, Hardware, Environment, Liveware, Liveware.
What is the SHELL Model?
Is a conceptual tool used to analyze the interaction of multiple system components.
The critical focus of the model is the human component (liveware), and how it interacts with the other components in the model.
Liveware-Liveware
**Interface between people.
**
The concern is leadership, cooperation, teamwork and personality interactions.
Liveware-Software
Interface between people and software (laws, rules, regulations, etc.)
Liveware-Hardware
Interface between people and hardware (human- machine systems).
Liveware-Environmemt
**Interface between people and the environment **(physical environment, out of direct control)
What is the PEAR Model?
The PEAR model is used to recall the four considerations for assessing and mitigating human factors in aviation maintenance.
What are the four considerations the PEAR Model is used to recall?
- People who do the job
- Environment in which they work
- Actions they perform
- Resources necessary to complete the job
What does the PEOPLE aspect entails?
Physical Factors, Physiological Factors, Psychological Factors, Psychosocial Factors.
What does the ENVIRONMENT aspect entails?
Physical Environment and Organizational Environment
