Module 1 [Data Scientist's Toolbox] Flashcards
Which are the types of data science questions?
The types are:
- Descriptive
- Exploratory
- Inferential
- Predictive
- Causal
- Mechanistic
What is the descriptive analysis? Give an example.
Descriptive analysis, as the name says, gives descriptions of the data and it doesn’t make any kind of connections among them.
An example is the census of some city.
What is the exploratory analysis? Give an example.
Exploratory analysis tries to discover relations among data, but doesn’t try to establish any kind of conclusion.
In this analysis, there is no research question defined yet.
Although some correlations can be found, they don’t imply in causation.
An example is brain scans, where correlated areas are usually activated together.
What is the inferential analysis? Give an example.
Inferential analysis gets data from a small population and tries to generalise conclusions for a big population.
It involves estimating both: the quantity you care about and your uncertainty about your estimate.
It depends heavily on both: the population and the sampling scheme.
