Module 1: Communication in a connected world Flashcards
What is the Internet?
The Internet is a worldwide collection of interconnected networks, cooperating to exchange information using common standards.
How do you refer to small networks such as those found in home offices or small offices?
SOHO
Small Office/Home Office
What is volunteered data?
Data that you offered yourself
What is inferred data?
Data that are generated by your activities
For example, everytime that you use a credit card, keeps a record, and therefore, if you move about different stores, things are being collected about you.
What is observed data?
Data that are being stored live from your devices (for example, smartphone)
How many bits is a byte?
8
How do computers communicate?
Computers use binary codes to represent and interpret characters with bits
The most common binary code is the American Standard Code for Information Interchange (ASCII)
What is media?
The physical medium on which the data is transmitted
What are the three most common methods of transmission used in networks?
- Electrical signals
- Optical signals
- Wireless signals
In which terms is data transfer discussed?
Bandwidth and throughput
What is bandwidth?
Is the capacity of a medium to carry data
What is digital bandwidth?
The amount of data that can flow from one place to another in a given amount of time
List the common measurements for bandwidth
- Thousands of bits per second (Kbps)
- Millions of bits per second (Mbps)
- Billion of bits per second (Gbps)
What is throughput?
Is the measure of the transfer bits across the media over a given period
Due to a number of factors, throughput does not usually match the specified bandwidth
List these factors
- The amount of data being sent or received over the connection
- The types of data being transmitted
- The latency created by the number of network devices encountered between source and destination
