Module 1 - Cells as the basis of life Flashcards
Cell
The smallest structural and functional unit in a living thing. A cell has a cell membrane and contain cytoplasm organelles and genetic material (DNA)
Cell membrane
A double layer of phospholipids that encloses the contents of a cell.Control the movement in and out of the cell.
(founders on the outside of cell)
Cytoplasm
The fluid of a cell. With organelles surrounding it.
found in centre of cell
Organelle
Has more than one job in the cytoplasm of a cell with other cell parts in it.
(including nucleus, Golgi, endoplasmic, ect.)
Nucleus
An organelle that contain genetic information and directs the activity of a cell.
( found in the centre of the cell)
Ribosome
A small organelle made of protein and RNA.
Golgi body
An organism made of a stack of cistern which makes protein.
Prokaryotic
A organism that do not have a cell membrane surrounding the nucleus and lack organelles.
(All are bacteria)
Eukaryotic
An organism whose cell contains a cell membrane bound nucleus.
(fungi, plants)
Cell wall
An external structure that surrounds the cell membrane for structure support/protection. Composed of cellulose in plants or peptidoglycan in bacteria.
(found on the outer layer of cell)
Mitochondria
Power house of cell provides energy (ATP) for aerobic cellular respiration.
Surface area (SA:V)
When a cell is very small and has a large surface are to volume ratio.
Vacuole
Storage bubbles in cell, may store food and nutrients needed for survival.
Chloroplast
Found in plant cell organelles which conducts photosynthesis.
(energy)
Endoplasmic reticulum
Transportation of the eukaryotic cell function is protein folding.
rough. E.R- protein synthesis
smooth. E.R-produces steroids
