Module 1 Flashcards
sphincter/o
sphincter
-otomy
surgical incision
anal fissure
a crack or tear(s) in the membrane that is the lining of the anus or anal canal
who does anal fissure removal and sphincterotomy
Proctologist or general surgeon
do you need anesthesia for anal fissure removal and sphincterotomy
any of the three, local, general, or spinal (usually general)
what testing might be done before an anal fissure removal and sphincterotomy
blood and urine studiesL anoscopy, sigmoidoscopy
length of hospital stay for anal fissure removal and sphincterotomy
0 to 1 day
anal fissure removal and sphincterotomy post op details
clean the area, use soft moistened tissues after every bowel movement
avoid vigorous exercise for 4 weeks
you may resume driving approx 1 week after returning home
to promote healing eat a balanced diet
increase fluid and fibre intake to prevent constipation
Anal fistula removal
abnormal connection between the epithelialized surface of the anal canal and (usually) the perianal skin
appendectomy
surgical removal of the vermiform appendix
Bariatric Surgery
gastric bypass - type of procedure performed on people who are dangerously obese, for the purpose of losing weight - achieved by reducing the size of the stomach with an implanted medical device (gastric banding) or through removal of a portion of the stomach
Cholecystectomy (lapraroscopic)
gall bladder removal - surgical removal of the gallbladder
laparoscope
a firber-optic instrument used for diagnostic imaging and surgical procedures
what is done before ANAL FISTULA REMOVAL
x-rays of the lower GI tract; colonoscopy
lay-open of fistula-in-ano is?
to cut the fistula open - once laid open, will be packed on a daily basis for a short period of time to ensure the wound will heal from the inside out
cutting seton is?
if the fistula is in a high position and it passes through a significant portion of the sphincter muscle - insert a thin tube through the fistula tract and tie the ends together outside of the body - the seton is tightened over time gradually cutting through the muscle and healing as it goes
fibrin glue injection is?
inject the fistula with a biodegradable glue which will close the fistula from the inside out
fistula plug is?
plug the fistula with a “plug” from the inside of the anus with suture, letting the fistula heal from the inside out
endorectal advancement flap
the internal opening of the fistula is identified and a flap of mucosal tissue is cut around the opening - the flap is lifted to expose the fistula, which is then cleaned and the internal opening is sewn shut - the flap is pulled down over and sewn
AFP / anal fistula plug
placement and fixing of a plug in the anal fistula by a special technique - requires hospitalization for only about 24 hours
colonoscopy
endoscopic examination of the colon to the distal part of the small bowel with a fiber optic camera on a flexible tube (called colonsscope) passed through the anus
colon/o
large intestine (colon)
-scopy
visual examination / using a scope
