Module 1 Flashcards
Point
A specific location. Has no dimension. Its symbol is a dot.
Line
A connected straight path. No thickness, continues forever in both directions.
Plane
A flat surface. No thickness, extends forever in all directions.
Segment
A portion of a line consisting of two endpoints and the points in between them.
Ray
A portion of a line that starts at the endpoint and continues on forever in one direction.
Coplanar
Points that lie on the same plane.
Colinear
Points that lie on the same line.
Postulate
A statement that is accepted as truth without a proof
Postulate 1: Segment Addition Postulate
Let A, B, and C be colinear points. If B is between A and C, then AB + BC = AC
Midpoint
Divides the line into two segments that have the same length.
Bisector
A line, ray, or segment that passes through the midpoint of a segment.
Angle
A figure formed by two rays with the same endpoint.
Vertex
The common endpoint of the angle.
Angle bisector
A ray that divides an angle into two angles that have the same measure.
Postulate 2: Angle Addition Postulate
If S is in the interior of
Transformation
A function that changes the position, shape, and/or size of a figure.
Rigid Motion
The action of taking an object and changes its position without altering its shape or size (the figures will be congruent).
Non-Rigid Motion
The action of taking an object and changing its size and/or shape.
Preimage
The original figure before the transformation
Image
The new figure that results from the transformation
Reflection
A mirror image or a flip over a line of symmetry. Rigid motion
Translation
A slide or glide. Rigid motion
Rotation
A twist or turn around a point, defined using clockwise or counterclockwise. Rigid motion
Dilation
Shrink or stretch the figure. Non rigid motion.
Linear Pair Theorem
A pair of adjacent angles whose non-common sides are opposite rays.
