What does the triage nurse do?

A

Triage nurses are the first health care professionals to meet patients and that initial interaction often sets the tone for the entire ED visit. Excellent triage nurses appreciate that showing compassion can often diffuse or eliminate frustrations associated with a visit to the ED.

What does the charge nurse do?

A

The CN is responsible for addressing operational demands and ensuring patients receive timely and appropriate health care. As well, the CN collaborates with leaders throughout the hospital to ensure that patients are admitted to the right area for definitive care. The CN liaises with all ED team members on an ongoing basis. Ideally, the CN is an expert practitioner, who is highly organized, able to prioritize, and has great interpersonal skills.

A

often works in the fast track or walking wounded area, and may provide care for patients who have been admitted to the hospital but have not yet been assigned a bed on an inpatient unit.

What does the ERP do?

A

a specialist in resuscitation, the management of major trauma, medical emergencies, pain relief, fractures, and soft tissue injuries. EPs excel in the provision of quality, evidence-based care. Commonly, EPs have specialty education in emergency medicine. In smaller centers, EPs may be general practitioners with an interest in emergency medicine.

A

pecialists in airway management, mechanical ventilation, blood acid-base balance, and critical care medicine. RTs work closely with other medical disciplines such as physicians and nurses.

also known as EHS (Emergency Health Service) or BCAS (British Columbia Ambulance Service) are allied health care workers certified to respond to medical and traumatic emergencies in the pre-hospital setting. Paramedics stabilize patients before and during transportation to the appropriate medical facility.
