MODULE 1 Flashcards
The fundamental principles of inheritance
Allele
a variant form of a gene
Law of Segregation
Each organism has two alleles per gene, but only one is passed to offspring.
Law of Independent Assortment
Alleles for different genes segregate independently during gamete formation.
Appears in every generation (e.g., Huntington’s Disease).
Autosomal dominant
Can skip generations (e.g., Cystic Fibrosis).
autosomal recessive
More males affected (e.g., Hemophilia).
X-linked recessive
Affected fathers pass to all daughters but never to sons.
X-linked dominant
Predicting inheritance of genetic disorders (e.g., BRCA gene in breast cancer).
genetic counseling
Used in agriculture (e.g., high-yield wheat, pest-resistant corn).
SELECTIVE BREEDING
DNA analysis in crime investigations.
