Module 1 Flashcards
What are atoms?
Atoms are the smallest particles of matter and everything in the universe is made up of atoms.
How many different types of atoms/elements?
118
How many types of atom does an element contain?
1
What elements are man-made?
All elements after number 92 are man-made.
What are the only liquid elements?
Mercury & Bromine
What are the vertical rows/columns in the periodic table called?
Groups.
What are the horizontal rows on the periodic table called?
Periods.
What is the first letter of a periodic symbol always?
A capital and the second is a small letter.
What side of the zig-zag line are metals?
The left.
What side of the zig-zag line are non-metals?
The right.
What are metals usually?
Shiny and can conduct energy.
Can non-metals conduct energy?
No.
What is the only non-metal that can conduct energy?
Carbon in the form of graphite
What happens when two or more different elements join?
They form a compound
What happens once a compound is formed?
They look and behave differently from the elements they are made from.
How many elements in a compound that ends in -ide?
2 different elements.
How do you name a compound ending in -ide?
The element further left is named first and the ending of the second element is changed to -ide.
What do compounds with ending -ate or -ite contain?
Oxygen as well as two other elements.
How do you know what compound has more oxygen?
Compounds ending in -ate = more oxygen
Compounds ending in -ite = less oxygen
What is the most common type of physical change?
A change of state.
What happens during a physical change?
NO new substance is formed and it is usually easy to reverse.
What happens during a chemical change?
A new substance is always formed and it can be difficult to reverse.
What are the four signs of a chemical reaction?
1) Bubbles are formed / gas given off
2) Change in temperature
3)Colour Change
4) Precipitate (solid) formed
An example of a chemical change is…
Water forming from hydrogen and oxygen.
An example of a physical change is…
Water evaporating and turning into a gas.
