28
Q

What does securing for sea mean and why do we do it?

A

Securing for sea is the process of preparing a ship for going to sea. This means securing all items or equipment that may shift with movement or be easily damaged.
If items are not secured and your ship encounters rough weather or enemy attack, this could result in the damage of valuable equipment, injuryto personnel or loss of operational efficiencyas unsecured loads can slide, shift, fall or become airborne

29
Q

What are three (3) actions you can take to secure for sea?

A

Stock rotation, or the ‘First in. First out’ principle is where stock is rotated to ensure that oldest stock is issued first to avoid IOS deteriorating or going past their use by date.

33
Q

What are three (3) environmental considerations you need to take into account when moving stores on the wharf? Briefly describe each consideration.

A
  1. Bad weathe—will mean that you need to appropriately cover and protect your stock, however it could also mean that contractors can’t use their cranes
  2. High Visibility Vests (HighVis)- High Vis makes you easier to see. This is particularly important ifthere is low visibilityor dark conditions and also to alert drivers and vehicle operators of your presence.
  3. Be aware of other people and your surroundings - The wharf is a shared space. Other ship departments may also be on the wharf carrying out various tasks which could impact your own work.
34
Q

What you should keep it in mind when moving stores in a ship?

A
  1. Sea State - Probably the most important factor to consider when moving stores in a shipisthatyouareatsea.Asyouknow, thisjsimportantbecauseyouneedto always make sure that eauipment and stock is secure for sea and not likely to shift or move unexpectedly.
  2. ThreePointContact-This is a very important issue with WHS on ships as accidents are incredibly common, even in calm weather. The only way to move between decks is using the ladders. The majority of ladders are steep and have stair treads and hand rails on both sides. To minimise the risk of falling, you must face the ladder and maintain 3 points of contact with it at all times. For example,if both your hands are on the ladder, then one of your legs must be too. If you remove a hand, you must have both of your legs and your other hand on the ladder. It is also important to check the tread on your boots to ensure that they have enough tread on them to prevent slipping or falling off the stairs of the ladder.
  3. Ladders- Unlike wharfs and warehouses,in the ship you will have to move heavy stores between decks on ladders. This can be done by using flaps on the sides of the ladders to slide stock between levels.
35
Q

What are the 8 steps for picking up a load? (In order)

  2. Test dates
  3. Serviceability
  4. Fuel or Charge
  5. For signs of visible damage
38
Q

In your own words, why is it important to consider the centre of balance of a load?

A

39
Q

List two reasons why it is important to secure stores prior to movement?
