What is Sociology?
Sociology, simply stated, is the study of social life, including all forms of interactions and relationships
What are Power-Relations?
Relations that either enable or constraint who you are
What is an Authority Figure?
Refers to asymmetrical power relations between an individual or group (e.g., relations between coach-athlete, parent-child, teacher-student)
What are Ideology & power relations?
Refers to power relations embedded within social structures in society (e.g., class, gender or race)
Power in sport is the ability to:
- Structure sport in preferred ways
- Establish selective sports traditions
- Define legitimate practices and
meanings of sport
What is a Sport?
“any formally organized, competitive activity that involves vigorous physical exertion or execution of complex physical skills with rules enforced by a regulatory body”
Sport is a social construction, which is to say that the structures, meanings and traditions of sport are always changing over time.
