Module 1 Flashcards
What is emotional intelligence?
Emotional intelligence is a set of emotional and social skills that collectively establish how well you:
- perceive and express yourself
- develop and maintain social relationships
- cope with day to day and major challenges
- use emotional information in effective and meaningful ways.
Put simply, emotional intelligence is how you combine your thinking with your feelings in order to build authentic relationships and make good, effective decisions.
What are soft skills?
Personal attributes that enable someone to interact effectively and harmoniously with other people.
Intra-
Inside or within
Inter-
among/between
Kinaesthetic
Relating to a person’s awareness of the position and movement of the parts of the body by means of sensory organs (proprioceptors) in the muscles and joints.
What is spatial intelligence?
Spatial intelligence is an area in the theory of multiple intelligences that deals with spatial judgment and the ability to visualize with the mind’s eye. It is defined by Howard Gardner as a human computational capacity that provides the ability or mental skill to solve spatial problems of navigation, visualization of objects from different angles and space, faces or scenes recognition, or to notice fine details.
Define the word correlated
Having a mutual relationship or connection
Define the word cognition
Cognition is the “mental action or process of acquiring knowledge and understanding through thought, experience, and the senses”.
Give generic examples as to how good levels of emotional intelligence help us.
Give 7 basic intelligences based on Howard Gardiner’s Multiple Intelligence Theory published in 1983.
- Visual and spatial intelligence
- Linguistic – verbal intelligence
- Logical – mathematical intelligence
- Bodily – kinaesthetic intelligence
- Musical intelligence
- Intrapersonal intelligence - self-awareness and self-management
- Interpersonal intelligence model - empathy and social skills
Is IQ and EQ correlated?
No. The best leaders have high emotional intelligence and have learnt to use it well. There is intelligence in emotions and intelligence can be brought to emotions. It means IQ defines how smart you are; EQ defines how well you use what smartness you have.
How does IQ differ from EQ?
IQ, or Intelligence Quotient, is a measure of cognitive intelligence. IQ becomes fixed and peaks around the age of 17 years whilst emotional intelligence rises steadily with age. You can develop your emotional intelligence through learning and practise.
What is EQ?
EQ refers to Emotional Quotient which looks at the parts of emotional intelligence that can be quantified and measured and as such is hard to specify.
What are the five main areas covered by Emotional Intelligence?
- self-awareness
- emotional control
- motivation
- empathy
- relationship skills
Emotional Intelligence is an integral part of
Leadership - Communication Skills - Motivation - Change Management - Teams and Team Working
Resilience - Coaching - Problem Solving and Decision Making - Influencing and Persuasion
