Module 1 Flashcards
Two types of analytical methods
- Classical
- volumetric
-gravimetric
- distillation - Instrumental
- spectroscopy
- mass spec
- separation
-electrochemical
Qualitative vs quantative chemical analysis
Qualitative: what is present in the sample
Quantative: how much is present in the sample
What is the analytical process
- Forming question
- Selecting a procedure
- Sampling
- Sample preparation
- Analysis
- Reporting and interpretation
- Drawing a conclusion
How to asses the strength of acids
How much it has the ability to donate H+
What does a small Ka imply
A weak acid
What happens when ionic strength of a solution increases
_I ncrease in ionic strength means a net reduction in attractive forces between any ions in solution
-since ions are less attracted to each other there’s a smaller tendency for them to come together increasing the solubility of the solution
What is ionic strength a measure of
Total concentration of ions in solution
What are activity coefficients
The activity of a species related to its molar concentration by a factor called activity coefficient
What is fraction of dissociation and equation
Fraction of an acid HA in the form of A-
Alpha= x/F
What is formal concentration
The total number of moles of a compound dissolved per L of solution
