Robert Koch
is a person in the population or study group identified as having the particular disease, health disorder or condition under investigation
Case
is the characteristics or condition of an individual who will be considered a case for the purposes of surveillance or research. This needs to be established before data collection and rigidly followed
Case Definition
a subject who meets all the characteristics and symptoms of a case but does not have formal diagnosis
Suspect case
a measure of adverse events resulting from the disease that can be identified by measuring results such as length of hospital stay, number of follow-up visits, recovery time, disability or death.
Case severity
appears suddenly and lasts for a short amount of time (e.g. fever)
Acute disease
develop gradually and remain for months on end (e.g. influenza virus and the common cold)
Chronic Disease
the time interval between when an individual or host is infected by a pathogen and when they become infectious, i.e. capable of transmitting pathogens to other susceptible individuals
Latent Period
the time elapsed between exposure to a pathogenic organism, a chemical, or radiation, and when symptoms and signs are first apparent
Incubation Period
also known as infectious diseases or transmissible diseases, are illnesses that result from the infection, presence and growth of pathogenic (capable of causing disease) biologic agents in an individual human or other animal host
Communicable Disease
a noninfectious health condition that cannot be spread from person to person. It also lasts for a long period of time. This is also known as a chronic disease. A combination of genetic, physiological, lifestyle, and environmental factors can cause these diseases
Non-communicable disease
