analytical frame of thinking, multi-axis categories of self, interlocking systems of privilege and oppression
Intersectionality is not
noun, not just about lists/catagories, only relevant to lgbtq or poc, not oppression olympics
what is intersectionality about?
self reflexivity and accountability so everyone can be liberated
What is Race?
Social construct/concept giving meaning to physical features.
What is ethnicity?
geographical or a language group with different customs and cultures.
How is hispanic not the ideal term?
Hispanic was created by the US govt used to identify people with latin origin. However meaning was ambiguous and often mis-included spanish/portugal decent
What is Latinx
refers to people with latin origin created by people with latin decent
What is Prejudice?
Thoughts, feelings, stereotypes, generalizations, and attitudes that people hold over another group of people.
What is discrimination?
Action on beliefs, actions based on prejudice.
What is Racism?
Systemic, structural, institutional control and legal control that sustains discrimination and prejudice.
Does Reverse Racism exist?
no because there is no Institutional control and legal control on the basis of whiteness
What is essentialism?
The belief that a group of people have a fixed/underlying essence and distinctive/defining characteristics that is unchanging and true for everyone in the group. (how to justify stripping rights from people)
How is race a social construct?
Race is not scientific or biological and race is about the meaning we give to ancestry. However race has material consequences though its a social construct.
Racial formation process: how are subjects racialized?
Racialized subjects are produced by essentialist logic, regulated by racial etiquette and constrained by the material consequences of above which therefore race is performative.
