Module 1 - 1.1.1 Cell Structure Flashcards
1
Q
What are Eukaryotic Cells?
A
Complex cells such as animal and plant cells. They have an organised nucleus with a nuclear envelope. The also have components that make the cell a self sufficient organism.
2
Q
What are Prokaryotic Cells?
A
Small, simple cells like bacteria that don’t have an organised nucleus.
3
Q
What is the function of a ribosome?
A
The site where proteins are made.
4
Q
What is a Lysosome?
A
A round organelle which is surrounded by a membrane. It contains digestive enzymes. This can be used to digest invading cellsor tobreak down worn out components.
5
Q
Explain the Sturcture of Mitochondria.
A
- Mitochondria are made of two membranes. The outer membrane contains the organelle like skin and the inner membrane folds over and makes layered structures called cristae.
- Fluid inside the structure is called the matrix. This is where the Mitochodrion’s DNA and ribosomes float.
- There are also structures called granules which control the concentrations of ions.
