Module 1 - 1.1.1 Atoms Flashcards
What are Atoms made up of?
Neutrons, electrons and protons.
Explain what Electrons are.
Electrons are subatomic particles with a -1 charge. They revolve around the nucleus in orbitals. The orbitals take up most of the volume of the atom.
What does the nucleus of an atom contain?
This is where most of the atom’s mass is concentrated. The diameter of the nucleus is however small compared to the whole atom. The nucleus is where Protons (+1 charge) and neutrons (0 charge) are found.
What is the relative mass of each subatomic particle?
Proton = 1 Neutron = 1 Electron = 1/2000 (negligible)
What are isotopes?
Isotopes are atoms of the same element with different Numbers of neutrons.
What is relative atomic mass?
The average mass of an atom of an element on a scale where an atom of carbon-12 is 12.
What is relative isotopic mass?
The mass of an isotope of an element on a scale where an atom of carbon-12 is 12.
(% abundance1 x relative atomic mass1) + (% abundance1 x relative atomic mass1) DIVIDED BY 100.
What is relative molecular mass?
The average mass of a molecule or formula unit on a scale where an atom or carbon- 12 is 12.
