Module 1 Flashcards
Differentiate between types of permanent and temporary organisation structures (including functional, matrix, and project)
Learn four characteristics of functional, matrix and project organisational structures
Use the characteristics to identify four differences between each of the structures
Functional structure:
team divided into groups along functional lines. The project can perform as part of the functional department or handed from one to the next.
Head of functional team would take overall responsibility
Funding come from board of organisation
Strength of this structure is people with the technical skills are delivering the project and it stays close to Business as usual.
Weakness is that becasue it is close to BAU, priorities can can mixed.
Matrix Structure
team members report into different managers but also report to Project manager for their part of the project.
Staff are chosen specifically for skills
These staff members are visable to whole organisation, create need for organisations to manage resources effectively
Dual reporting lines can cause issues.
Project structure:
When organisation is made up of projects.
Each project has a Project Manager reporting directly into the board
All work is project related and therefore once project is completed, team is dispanded
Strength is that it is solely focussed on projects and no BAU
Weakness, teams are very insular and learnings are not carried forward into next project.
limited job security due to project cycle.
