Modular Fixturing Flashcards
Any standard or commercial jig and fixture component may be considered to be modular
True
Major advantage of dowel pin systems
Automatic positioning of the components from one tool to the next
Any tool over 30 lbs needs
Hoist rings
Jigs mostly for
Drilling operations
Fixture keys
Accurate relationship btw fixture and machine tool
Holds fixture in position during machining
Use of set blocks for batch production
Always ref. Cutter to fixture not the part Set blocks eliminate 1st part variations.
Tack time
Available time / customer time
Push clamp ( power work holding)
Fluid pressure advances plunger and spring load retracts it
Pull clamps (power workholding)
Simplest way to convert Manuel to power most versatile
Overall equipment effectiveness calc
Maxine availability x performance x quality
Modular fixturing
Work holding system uses a series of reusable standard components build variety of special purpose work holding devices
Threaded inserts
Repair or construct existing threads in tooling
Template jigs
Most simple. Least expensive and held in my hand. Designed for accuracy and speed
Plate jigs
Similar to template except has built in clamping device. Usually screw clamp
Table jigs
Template or plate jig raised upon legs
Box jig
Allows to be machined all six sides
Indexing jig
Used when pattern of holds needed to be drilled
Advantages of modular fixtures
Increases productions and reduces fixturing cost
Poor applications of modular fixtures
Highly repeatable
Large lot size
Compactness required
Operating pressure power workholding
Usually 6000 psi with reserve of 25%
Power sources of power workholding
Electrical. Air. Hand pumps. And screw pumps
Three way clamping valves
Works in single acting system. Acts independently of each other
Four way clamping valve
Acts independently but designed for double acting system
