Why do we need laws?
They teach people how to behave properly
They keep order in society
They make sure bad behaviour is punished
They protect the weak and innocent
Why does there need to be a connection between law and justice?
If law is unjust people will brake the law
If law is unjust it is not fulfilling its purpose as a law e.g. Protect the weak from the strong
If the law is unjust people will disobey it and cause trouble in society
If laws do not create a just society then people will think there is no law to protect them and war could brake out e.g. Kosovo
Retribution is the theory that criminals should pay for there crimes. What are the reasons why people think this is the best form of punishment?
It makes criminals pay for their crimes
It makes criminals suffer for what they have done wrong
It actually punishes criminals
It protects society through punishment
Why do some people disagree with retribution?
It doesn’t always make the criminal a better person
It can lead criminals to act in revenge when they get out of prison
It allows the death penalty which is wrong
It doesn’t reform the criminal

If people knew they would be killed for killing someone then they won’t commit murder
If people knew they would go to jail for the rest of there life then they won commit the crime
If people knew they would get a huge fine cor committing a crime then they won’t commit that crime
If people knew they would get there hands chopped off for stealing they won’t steal

In countries where you get killed for killing someone the murder rates are still high
In countries where people get there hands chopped off for stealing people still steal
In countries where people go to jail for the rest of there life for committing Citroen crimes they still commit these crimes so it doesn’t work
In countries where you get huge fines for committing crimes people still commit these crimes so it doesn’t work
Reform is the theory that criminals should be taught not to commit crime again, why do some people believe that this is the best form of punishment?
The only way to stop crime is to turn criminals into law abiding citizens
A number of criminals never reoffend so it must work
Reform allows criminals to get a education so they can get a job when they a released from prison
It acts like a shock to make criminals think about there lifestyle

It allows capital punishment which means the criminals are dead and can not reoffend
Long prison sentence keeps criminals out of society so people are protected
Community service keeps criminals off the streets so they can not commit crime

It allows the death penalty which is wrong

Why are some christians against capital punishment?
Jesus came to save sinners not kill them
Jesus said an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth is wrong
Only god can give and take life, it is not for humans to decide
In the Decalogue (10 commandments) it says “do not kill”

The Bible allows capital punishment for some crimes
It says in the Bible an “eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth” is ok. So If someone takes a life,theirs should be taken
The Christian church has used capital punishment in the past
It is a good deterrent which stops crimes
