Q

4 Ways of Adapting to Strain

A
  • Innovation: the most common of four deviant types. “The end justifies the means”
  • Ritualism: the means become the aspirations of an individual (e. g. keeping a job as a form of security)
  • Retreatism: a rejection of both the goals and the means (vagrants, drug addicts, etc.)
  • Rebellion: focuses on the substitution of new goals and means (revolutionaries, etc.)
