4 Ways of Adapting to Strain
A
- Innovation: the most common of four deviant types. “The end justifies the means”
- Ritualism: the means become the aspirations of an individual (e. g. keeping a job as a form of security)
- Retreatism: a rejection of both the goals and the means (vagrants, drug addicts, etc.)
- Rebellion: focuses on the substitution of new goals and means (revolutionaries, etc.)

Theory’s Emphasis
A
The theory focuses solely on socially-structured sources of deviance and purposefully does not discuss the social mechanisms by which individuals come to such deviance

2 Types of Conformity
A
- Real conformity found in individuals for whom there is no problem in accessing the means for achieving the goals
- As a deviant mode of adaptation found in individuals who remain committed to the goals despite not having access to the means
