Q

What is the whole-half Diminished scale?

A

1 - 9 b3 - 11 - b5 - #5 - 13 - 7 (w h w h w h w h). This can be thought of as the “diminished-diminished” scale. It is one of the two variants on the diminished scale.

17
Q

What is the Altered scale?

A

1 - b9 - #9 - 3 - b5 - #5 - 7 (h w h w w w w).

The Altered scale can also can be thought of as as a major scale with the root raised by a whole step. So the way to find an altered scale in any key is to locate the Major key signature that is one half step below the root of the Altered scale that you are trying to find, and bring the root of that scale up one half step. (example: the E altered scale has the key signature of Eb, minus the Eb since the root is brought up by one half step (E, F G Ab Bb C D).

The Altered scale is A.K.A the mode that is built off of the 7th degree of the Melodic minor scale.

18
Q

What is the Melodic Minor scale?

A

1 - 9 - b3 - 11 - 5 - 13 - 7 (w h w w w w h) if the scale is ascending, then
b7 - b13 - 5 - 11 -b3 - 9 - 1 (w w h w w h w) if it is descending. In the context of Jazz, however, only the ascending is form is used.
