What is the Enlightenment project?
This was a philosophical, intellectual and influential movement. It led to the power of reason being more powerful than the power of leaving all reason to God. The power of science and reason helped to bring about more positive change to all those that used it to create a better society.
When did the Enlightenment project start?
In the C18th. the 18th Century
what is the difference between conflict and consensus theories?
The difference is that consensus theories tend to look at the positive side and how it brings everyone together in harmony. While conflict theories focus more on the disagreements between different groups within society
Give examples of consensus and conflict theories
Consensus- Functionalist
Conflict- Marxist/Feminist
What is the basis of Feminism/Marxism/Functionalism
Feminists- Society is based on gender inequality, all institutes are Patriarchal Marxists- Society is based on class inequality, all institutes benefits the RC Functionalists- Everything in society has a function, it all helps create social solidarity
What are the bourgeoisie/ proletariat
Bourgeoisie- The RC
Proletariat- The lower classes
What is Postmodernism?
While Modernists se society as static and fixed Postmodernists do not see this and instead see society as something that is fragmented
What are Structural Approaches
Structural approaches are: Deterministic, Macro level and Top-Down approaches that see society as objective and external to individuals
What are Action Approaches
Action approaches are: Voluntaristic, Micro level, and are Bottom-Up approaches that see society as intersubjective and constructed by integration and meaning.
Define Deterministic
There is no free will , all actions are based upon socialisation
Define Macro level
The theory focuses on the larger scale. The social structure and not the individual
Define Top-Down
You are shaped by your society and not your choices
Define Voluntaristic
You have free will, you are not determined by your socialisation but by your actions
Define Micro level
This theory focuses more on the face-to-face interactions between people
Define Bottom-Up
You shape your society
